Tony Banks fronted our visit to Alverthorpe School where the children learned
first hand  about life down a coal mine.

The children had hands on experience of
some of the items from our
collection of mining memorabilia.

Tony really caught the imagination of the children, whose comments are below.
Dear Tony and Mike
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about mining.
The artefacts were fascinating (Even if i could not see them) and so were the fossils. Cassidy.

Dear Tony and Mike
Many thanks for taking the time to share your beautiful memories of the Lofthouse disaster with us.
I cannot believe that an actual mine was 300ft below our school.
                                Ben

Dear Tony and Mike
Your visit gave me more knowledge about mining and some fascinating information,
I am still wondering how you put your lifesaver on so fast.
                                Lois

Dear Tony and Mike
I particularly enjoyed being Jesse and putting on the miners clothes.
When you told us all what happened on the day of the disaster it was very exciting.
                                  Eve

Dear Tony and Mike
Thanks for showing us your coal what you got from Selby pit.
Ever since you came in i have learned a lot. The coal was 3 million years old.
                                                        Kieran

Dear Tony and Mike
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about the Lofthouse disaster.
I learned a lot about mining. The miners must have been really strong to lift those tools. I thought the breathing mask was funny, but i am sure it would hurt your nose.
                               Luke

Dear Tony and Mike
I found all your mining equipment very interesting your visit has given me a lot more information.
I thought the snap tin was hard to open, but i did get in eventually
                               Elisha

Dear Tony and Mike
I could write a whole story about what you told us, but i wont
The miners lamps have been kept in good condition, what was the little one for, was it for the ponies or Little Mike?
It was the best day at school yet and the funniest as well, I know lots about it now.
                                                    Ashleigh

Dear Tony and Mike
Many thanks for telling us about the Lofthouse disaster, it would be good if you could have stopped a bit longer to tell us more about it.
When you asked for volunteers i put my hand straight up.
It was a wonderful experience having you telling us about it.
                              Kimberley

Dear Tony and Mike
I really enjoyed it when you got Kimberley, Sophie and many other people to dress up.
The best bit was when you introduced Joe in them big clogs, Thank you for coming and talking about the Lofthouse disaster.
